H.R. 3:
My friend and colleague Representative Elijah Cummings was called home today. Elijah Cummings was a man of the people. He was a tireless, effective, dedicated public servant, a man of faith and humanity and dignity, a man who committed his life to the quest for social, economic and environmental justice. I know that, because of his life's work, hundreds other young men and women will rise to follow in his footsteps. America will miss him, this Congress will miss him, the host of those who called him family or friend will miss him and I will miss him.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) and Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.) introduced the FAFSA Act (the Financial Aid Fairness for Students Act) to repeal a law that makes it all but impossible for people with a drug conviction, no matter how petty, to receive federal financial aid for higher education.
The law in question, Section 484(r) of the Higher Education Act, suspends federal college aid from FAFSA for any person who is convicted of a drug offense. The law has discouraged thousands from even applying for aid and has denied aid from many as well.
