Statement of Rep. Danny K. Davis on the Passing of Congresswoman Cardiss Collins
I have been informed that over the weekend my predecessor, former 7th Congressional District Congresswoman Cardiss Collins died of natural causes. Cardiss Collins, my predecessor after the death of her husband George, who died in an airplane crash, was elected to succeed him in June of 1973.

"Today I voted against H.R. 325 "to ensure the complete and timely
payment of the obligations of the United States Government until May
19, 2013, and for other purposes." This bill "suspends" the limit on
the United States debt ceiling until May 19, 2013. What it means in
practice is the the United States will continue to pay for the bills
we have already incurred as we promised and as the American people and

Today, I ardently oppose the Republican tax bill that burdens middle-class, elderly, and struggling Americans, that undermines our economic growth, and that gives a windfall to the wealthy. It is cruel to eliminate emergency unemployment benefits that provide critical assistance for over 2 million Americans – including 90,000 Illinoisans – while gifting millionaires an additional $50,000 a year.
