REP. DAVIS FLOOR STATEMENT ON THE FY12 BUDGET

Mr. Speaker, as we prepare to debate the budget, and as we have already begun to debate, it is a budget that in many instances and in many ways spells gloom and doom for people who have been expecting and looking for some opportunity to move our government and our country forward.

In order to really understand how we got to where we are, I think it is important for us to remember that President Clinton left President Bush with a 10-year projected surplus of $5.6 trillion in 2001.

Washington, DC - Forty seven years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared in his State of the Union address, a legislative program titled the War on Poverty. During this time, the national poverty rate was nineteen percent and there was an expansion in government's role in social welfare programs producing a decline for the next decade.

REP. DAVIS SUPPORTS THE FDA FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT

Rep. Davis entered the following statement into the record.

“Madame Speaker, I rise today in support of H.R. 2751, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, a bill that would overhaul our nation’s food safety system by fundamentally changing the way we protect the safety of our food supply. The focus of this legislative measure is to prevent contamination of food before it occurs, which is a departure from the current system today that responds after a food-borne illness outbreak.
