WASHINGTON, DC -- The American Rescue Act is a marker for moving the country beyond the COVID crisis. The current pandemic has illuminated the extreme levels of poverty, job insecurity and exposed the daily challenges of middle class and poor Americans.

These past few weeks have seen some truly remarkable, historic actions in the Congress. Today we will finalize the passage of the American Recovery Act. Last week the House passed the For the People Act to protect our democracy and expand voting rights. Yesterday, in response to the staggering and growing economic inequality in the U.S., in a no less historic action, the House passed the Protect the Right to Organize Act.

Today Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-07) introduced the Stop Taxing Student Loan Relief Act which offers tax protection for student loan borrowers. Cancellation of student loan debt is likely taxable for the borrower. Without a forgiveness mechanism, borrowers whose loans are discharged can be met with hefty tax bills. "Student loan borrowers are often struggling to make ends meet and should not be penalized for qualifying for loan relief." Davis stated. "This bill exempts student loan forgiveness from taxation through 2026".
Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (D-CT), Worker and Family Support Subcommittee Chairman Danny K. Davis (D-IL), and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) called for the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Social Security, Andrew Saul, and the Deputy Commissioner, David Black, who were both appointed by former President Trump.
