Act to Reduce Child Poverty Rates

Today, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that one-fifth of children lived in poverty in 2014.
Like all of Chicago, I was shocked and deeply saddened to read of the discovery of an infant’s body in the Garfield Park Lagoon. Any child who dies is a heartbreak but this extraordinarily horrific case tears deep at the heart of us all. Though we do not yet know the child’s identity, my heartfelt sympathies go out to the parents and family.
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Helen Burns Jackson, the mother of Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson. Rev. Jackson often spoke of his love, his appreciation and close relationship with his mother and my heart goes out to him and the entire Jackson and Burns families. Of course, Mrs. Jackson was, on her part, justly proud of her sons.

Today, Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-7) marked Women’s Equality Day in celebration of the adoption of the 19th amendment 95 years ago by calling for an escalation of the struggle for full equality for women in every aspect of life.
