Washington, D.C. - Congressman Danny K. Davis released the following statement on the election of President Elect Barack Obama.

"Tuesday November 4, 2008 is now inscribed in history as the day Barack Obama became President Elect of the United States. It also marks the day that our politics changed forever. President Elect Obama assembled a technologically savvy campaign team of unparalleled skill, discipline and drive and they flawlessly executed a brilliant campaign plan with resolve and dignity. His campaign grew directly out of his experience as a community organizer, and his confidence in empowering people to take control of their own destiny. His vision attracted millions of small donors and volunteers who broke down racial, generational and cultural barriers which had previously limited participation in the political process. Obama appealed to our higher selves, awakened our sense of hope and rejected the politics of fear. The new coalitions which emerged in the course of this election reflect the demographics of our nation and the great principles set forth in our nations founding documents in a profound new way.

Facing the worst financial and economic crisis since the Great Depression, stagnant wages and the worst job-creation record since Hoover; a broken health care system which strands forty seven million Americans with no insurance and leaves many millions more under served, facing two wars which have taken the lives of more than four thousand brave young Americans, cost hundreds of billions of dollars but have not made us safer; facing an unsustainable energy infrastructure, and an education system increasingly failing our youth, when President Obama is sworn in on January 20, 2009 he will inherit unprecedented challenges.

Drawing on the experience of Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy, President Elect Obama's election night remarks laid out his plans to address these crises by tapping into a new spirit of patriotism, of service, of responsibility and unity of national purpose. He set our sights firmly on the future.

If the Kennedy Administration was Camelot, then the Obama Presidency will be Star Trek, a bold new endeavor taking our nation to new heights where no nation has gone before. As President Elect Obama has warned us, there will be setbacks and false starts. There will be some who will disagree with this or that decision or policy. For those armed with the same confidence in our people as President Elect Obama, for those that share his faith that our people have the initiative and the natural ability to tackle and solve any problem we face as a nation, the future, the days ahead already call us to stretch our imaginations for new solutions to old problems. I, for one, am excited about the mission, eager and prepared to assume my responsibilities as a Member of Congress on January 6, 2009."
