CONGRESSMAN DANNY K. DAVIS JOINS HUD’S REGIONAL OFFICE TO ANNOUNCE $5.5 MILLION FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE IN HUD-ASSISTED MULTIFAMILY PROPERTY
Green and Resilient Retrofit Program investments increase housing supply, promote carbon reduction, renewable energy generation, and climate resilience upgrades in low-income rental housing
CHICAGO – Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-07) and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Great Lakes Regional Administrator Diane M. Shelley announced a $5.5 million-dollar Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP) award to Preservation of Affordable Housing at Corcoran Place Apartment, 345 N Austin Blvd in Chicago, Illinois.
This GRRP award will support ambitious upgrades at the Corcoran Place Apartment that improve quality of life for residents by improving air quality, enhance HVAC systems, update rental units and increase community green space. Investments will also increase the number of rental units at some of the properties and reduce carbon emissions, generate renewable energy, promote the use of green building materials, and enhance climate resilience.
President Joe Biden is expanding clean, affordable energy to hardworking families through the building sector.
Congressman Danny K. Davis said, "HUD's Green and Resilient Retrofit Program is a shining example of our commitment to a sustainable and resilient future. By investing in innovative solutions for our housing infrastructure, we not only create healthier and more energy-efficient homes but also pave the way for a greener and more prosperous America. This program is a testament to our dedication to both environmental stewardship and economic progress."
GRRP is the first HUD program to simultaneously invest in energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, climate resilience, and low embodied carbon materials in HUD-assisted multifamily housing. Investments under the program will be made in affordable housing communities serving low-income families in accordance with Bidenomics—President Biden’s agenda for building the American economy from the middle out and the bottom up.
“Investing in clean energy homes for our residents is a crucial stride toward reaching our goal of transformative housing and community development,” said HUD’s Great Lakes Regional Administrator Diane M. Shelley. “The investment helps us pave the way for a sustainable future.”
All the investments under the GRRP will advance environmental justice by serving low-income families in alignment with the Administration’s Justice 40 initiative. It will make their homes more resilient to extreme weather events and enhance their ability to more quickly respond to and recover from such events.
