Congressman Danny K. Davis Condemns Trump Administration Move to Allow Discrimination in Foster Care

January 24, 2019

Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-7), a member of the Ways and Means
Committee with jurisdiction over federal policy with respect to
tax-exempt organizations and child welfare, released the following
statement regarding the Trump administration’s decision to allow
foster care entities to permit foster care placement agencies to
discriminate using federal funds:

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms, in blatant violation of
the first amendment and the most fundamental underpinnings of our
Democracy, the decision by the Trump Administration to use federal
dollars to promote discrimination by foster care entities based on
religious beliefs. Today’s decision tells loving, qualified families
who are Jewish, Catholic, or any other religion that a foster care
entity may deem them not worthy to care for or even mentor foster
youth. There is a shortage of loving, qualified foster parents, and
the Trump Administration waiver prioritizes prejudice at the expense
of vulnerable foster youth, denying them the stability they deserve
and exacerbating the shortage of qualified foster parents. The
federal government should never sanction discrimination based on race,
religion, sexual orientation or any other protected class.”
