Congressman Danny K. Davis Applauds President Biden and Organizers for Designating Roberts Temple Church as a National Monument

Washington DC – A few weeks ago Congresspersons Danny K. Davis, Robin Kelly, and Jonathan Jackson introduced legislation to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley and Roberts Temple national historic site in the state of Illinois. Joining the Congresspersons at the announcement were Roberts Temple Pastor Cleven Wardlaw, Pastor Wheeler Parker Jr. (Emmitt Till’s cousin), Rev. Al Sampson, Dr. Marvel Parker, Executive Director of Preserve Roberts Temple, Ollie Gordan, Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation, and others.
Today, Congressman Danny K. Davis proudly commends President Joseph Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris and the dedicated organizers whose tireless efforts have led to the historic proclamation designating Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, Illinois, and other significant sites in Mississippi as National Monuments. This momentous decision represents a significant step in preserving our nation's rich history and cultural heritage for generations to come.
"It is with immense pride and gratitude that we applaud President Joseph Biden and the remarkable individuals whose passion for preserving our history led to the proclamation designating Roberts Temple Church and other sites as National Monuments," said Congressman Davis. "These sites stand as a poignant reminder of the struggles endured and the progress achieved in the pursuit of civil rights. By preserving these hallowed grounds, we honor the sacrifices of those who fought tirelessly for justice and equality, and we impart valuable lessons to the generations to come."
The proclamation, issued by President Biden, recognizes the profound significance of Roberts Temple Church and the broader sites in Mississippi in shaping the course of civil rights history in the United States. By designating these sites as National Monuments, we honor the courageous individuals who stood at the forefront of the civil rights movement and celebrate their remarkable contributions in the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ holds a special place in our collective memory as the location where the funeral of young Emmett Till was held in 1955. The brutal murder of Emmett Till, an innocent African-American teenager, ignited a spark in the civil rights movement that demanded an end to racial discrimination and violence. By preserving this sacred site, we ensure that future generations will be able to learn from our history, drawing inspiration from the resilience and determination of those who fought for justice.
In addition to Roberts Temple Church, the President's proclamation also recognizes other sites in Mississippi that played crucial roles in advancing civil rights, underscoring the significance of these locations in our national narrative.
Congressman Davis wishes to extend his heartfelt gratitude to President Biden for his leadership and commitment to preserving our nation's heritage. Additionally, he acknowledges the invaluable contributions of the organizers, historians, community leaders, and advocates whose unwavering dedication made this proclamation possible. Together, their collaborative efforts have culminated in the recognition of these sites as National Monuments, ensuring their protection and accessibility for future generations.
Congressman Davis looks forward to continuing to work with President Biden and his fellow lawmakers to safeguard our nation's historical landmarks and advance the cause of civil rights, ensuring that the spirit of perseverance and unity continues to guide our path forward.
