Congressman Danny K. Davis Announces His Committee Assignments in 114th Congress

January 13, 2015

Congressman Danny K. Davis today announced that he has been appointed
to serve again on the Committee on Ways and Means. He will be a
member of the Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Human
Resources. He has also filed for a waiver to continue service on the
Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to continue his work on
postal reform.

Congressman Davis stated, “Much of the work of the Congress is done by
committee. The responsibilities associated with these assignments are
critical for the nation and especially for the people of the 7th
Congressional District of Illinois. I am looking forward to getting
back to work on the array of challenges facing our community. My
participation in these committee structures will provide an
opportunity to help ensure that the concerns and voice of urban
America will be heard in our national debate on policy and program, in
prioritizing and implementing a national agenda and in ensuring that
the actions of our government reflect the values and commitments which
the American people expect and demand.”

According to the rules of the House of Representatives the Committee
on Ways and Means has the responsibility for raising the revenue
required to finance the Federal Government. This includes individual
and corporate income taxes, excise, estate and gift taxes, as well as
bonded debt, trade and tariffs, most of the programs authorized by the
Social Security Act, child welfare, unemployment insurance, social
services programs providing payments for health care, health delivery
systems, or health research and health insurance premiums and health
care costs.

The jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Health include bills and
matters referred to the Committee on Ways and Means that relate to the
public assistance provisions of the Social Security Act, including
temporary assistance for needy families, child care, child and family
services, child support, foster care, adoption, supplemental security
income, social services, eligibility of welfare recipients for food
stamps, and low-income energy assistance.

The jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Human Resources include bills
and matters referred to the Committee on Ways and Means that relate to
the Federal-State system of unemployment compensation including
programs for extended and emergency benefits.

Because the Committee on Ways and Means is one of four “exclusive”
committees of the Congress, members who seek an additional assignment
must request a waiver for permission to hold the additional
assignment.
