CONGRESSMAN DANNY K. DAVIS INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH THE EMMETT TILL AND MAMIE TILL-MOBLEY AND ROBERTS TEMPLE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS

Chicago, IL — Congressman Danny K. Davis, representing the 7th District of Illinois, is proud to announce the introduction of historic legislation to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley and Roberts Temple National Historic Site in the State of Illinois. Joining Congressman Davis as original sponsors include Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), Congressman Jonathan Jackson (IL-01), Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-00), Congressman Henry “Hank” Johnson (GA-04), and Congressman Andre Carson (IN-07). U. S. Senator Tammy Duckworth introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
Joining Congressman Danny K. Davis are Pastor Wheeler Parker, Emmett Till's cousin who was with him when he was kidnapped, COGIC church faith leaders including Superintendent and Pastor Michael Eaddy, Bishop Edwin Walker and the Pastor of Roberts Temple COGIC Pastor Wardlaw and others.
This legislation aims to honor the legacy of Emmett Till, his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, and the historic Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, by preserving and commemorating their indelible impact on the civil rights movement.
The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley and Roberts Temple National Historic Site Act is a significant step towards recognizing the importance of these figures and their contributions to American history. This legislation seeks to secure federal recognition for the site, ensuring its preservation, protection, and interpretation for future generations.
The proposed national historic site will encompass the location that played a crucial role in the tragic events surrounding the murder of Emmett Till and the subsequent activism that led to a significant shift in the civil rights movement. The site is the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, where Emmett Till's funeral was held.
Congressman Davis emphasizes the significance of establishing this national historic site, stating, "Emmett Till's story is a painful reminder of the injustices suffered by African Americans during a tumultuous period in our nation's history. By creating the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley and Roberts Temple National Historic Site, we will ensure that these historic landmarks continue to educate and inspire future generations, fostering a deeper understanding of the civil rights struggle."
“Roberts Temple stands as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the importance of preserving our collective memory. It was in this place that Mamie Till-Mobley mourned her son Emmett Till and forced the country, and the world, to reckon with the racist violence that murdered her son. This legislation not only seeks to protect the physical space of Roberts Temple, it aims to provide educational opportunities that will ensure future generations fully understand the significance of this site. We hope to inspire the next generation to carry on this legacy and work for equality and justice for all,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly.
The proposed legislation has garnered significant support from a wide range of stakeholders, including community leaders, civil rights activists, historians, and organizations dedicated to promoting racial justice. Their collective efforts aim to raise awareness about the impact of racial violence and the ongoing fight for equality, justice, and respect for all.
Congressman Danny K. Davis urges his colleagues in Congress to join him in supporting this important legislation, recognizing the importance of preserving the memory and legacy of Emmett Till, Mamie Till-Mobley, and the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ. Together, they can ensure that this national historic site becomes a symbol of resilience, education, and remembrance.
