Statement of Congressman Danny K. Davis on S2163 Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys Act – Representative Frederika Wilson

Many factors have contributed to the fact that many African American Males, men and boys, have been hampered and seriously challenged in their efforts to keep pace with other components of society.

Slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, poor schools, lack of opportunity, social conditions in their neighborhoods, in essence systemic racism.  I and others have worked on these issues for many years.  Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton created a Congressional Caucus on Black Men and Boys.  We have held Status of Black Men and Boys Conferences all across America and we worked with President Barack Obama to develop and implement the My Brothers Keepers Program.  I am pleased to note that it is still being implemented by the Obama Foundation.

I’ve seen and worked with many efforts on these issues at every level of society, but I don’t know of any program that is more appealing or more effective than the 5000 Role Models Program spearheaded by the Honorable Frederika Wilson in Miami Florida.  I congratulate her.  I am pleased to vote in favor of S2163 which establishes the Commission on the Status of Black Men and Boys.

Congresswoman Wilson brought her passion and expertise to Washington and this is one of the results.  Congratulations Congresswoman, it’s a good and thoughtful bill.Statement of Congressman Danny K.
