Rep. Davis Supports Republic Window and Doors Workers
December 8, 2008Representative Danny K. Davis' Statement of Support for Republic Window and Doors Workers
Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL07) today issued the following statement:
I fully support workers at Republic Windows and Doors in their struggle for justice, in their struggle for what they have earned through their honest labor. These workers and their union, United Electrical Workers (UE) have taken a courageous stand against corporate policies and practices which disregard hard won laws and contracts designed to protect working men and women and which disrespect and devalue those who produce our goods and provide our services. For the past eight years the rights of working folk have been routinely trampled with particular disregard.

Now in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the big banks and insurance companies, have come to the American people begging for relief. In the interest of the economy as a whole, Congress provided hundreds of billions of dollars in bailouts and the Federal Reserve has provided hundreds of billions more, to keep our economy from sliding into deep depression. These companies and their executives, including Bank of America, accumulated unprecedented profits, and many still continue to pay exorbitant salaries and bonuses to their executives. Now Bank of America has indicated despite the billions in aid they have received they feel no responsibility to use even a tiny fraction of that aid to fulfil their obligations to ordinary workers. It is to the great shame of Bank of America that they have withdrawn support for these workers who produce the energy efficient doors and windows that are a critical piece of greening our economy and freeing our nation from its dependence on imported oil.
The workers at Republic Windows and Doors and their union, UE, in the great tradition of our history, have understood that no one will protect their rights if they do not take the lead in their own defense. They deserve our support and I am proud to stand with them.
