Washington, DC - The restaurant industry is one of the hardest-hit industries by the dual health and economic crises. The workers. The owners. The suppliers. All have lost. In Chicago, restaurants undergird the economy of entire neighborhoods. Chinatown. Greektown. Little Italy. Downtown. They are all hurting. The traditional soul food eateries are basically wiped out, like MacArthur’s or Wallace’s Catfish Corner. If a big restaurant like Lawry’s lacks the resources to continue, these smaller businesses have little chance.
You know, I’ve listened to all of the questions. And, as I listen, I’ve said to myself this reinforces to me the fact that I am a proud co-sponsor of the Butch-Lewis Act because it reassures tens of thousands of hard-working Americans in Illinois and across this nation that their government will protect their pensions from catastrophe. This markup is long overdue. In my District alone, at least $81 million in Central States pensions are at risk; in Illinois, over $3 billion in pensions are at-risk.
When only 39% of Americans have enough savings to cover an emergency costing $1,000, and when 67% of Americans say that they’ll outlive their retirement savings, Congress must act.
I join with over a dozen retirement and non-profit organizations to whole-heartedly support the SECURE Act because it makes long-overdue changes to help workers save for retirement.

Congress should work together to address the needs of the American people, like passing a budget and long-term appropriations bills, providing a long-term solution for our critical health care programs, funding disaster assistance for communities still reeling from hurricanes and wild fires, and addressing Trump’s manmade immigration crisis.
